About Team Scandia
Team Scandia was founded in 1994 by Andy Evans and Dick Simon, although Evans eventually bought the team outright in 1996. Between 1994 and 1999, when the group dissolved due to a lack of financing, Team Scandia was one of the most popular teams in the Indy Racing League. Some of Team Scandia’s top achievements included winning first place at the ’95 and ’97 12 Hours of Sebring events and fielding seven cars at the ’96 Indianapolis 500. Evans ability to attract talented drivers from all over the world was one of the factors that contributed to Team Scandia’s success.
Andy Evans
Andy Evans was more than just the owner of Team Scandia. He was also one of the team’s most important drivers. He was instrumental in the two wins at 12 Hours of Sebring. In addition to his savvy racing skills, he also had organizational and management skills that helped the team find success. He even formed a strong relationship with Ferrari that allowed Team Scandia to use some of the most advanced race vehicles in the industry.
Eric van de Poele
Also a member of the legendary ’95 and ’97 12 Hours of Sebring teams, Eric van de Poele has a strong reputation as a driver in the United States and Europe. He shot to fame in 1984 after winning Belgium and Benelux Ford Formula One titles. He has also been noted for his achievements racing in the Rolex Sports Car Series.
Fermin Velez
Fermin Velez joined Team Scandia in 1995 and helped the group win first place at both 12 Hours of Sebring events. Unfortunately his career was cut short due to a long battle with cancer. He passed away in his native home, Barcelona, Spain, in 2003.
Eliseo Salazar
Eliseo Salazar, a driver from Chile, joined Team Scandia in 1996. Although he was a member for two short years, he played an important part on the team, especially during 1997, when he took first place at a Las Vegas Motor Speedway event. It was the team’s only IRL victory that year.
